The cities and towns in Tohoku served as host towns for the 2020 Tokyo Games held in July and August of 2021, fostering ties with various countries. There are also countries that have been linked to Tohoku since the Great Tohoku Japan Earthquake.Thank you for everything you have done and we will continue to welcome foreign visitors to Japan with the same spirit. What is a "Host town"?

A "Host Town" is a registration system that allows Japanese local governments to exchange human, economic and cultural information with the participating countries and regions of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.

What is an “Arigato Host Town”

In some host towns, the local governments in the three prefectures affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake (Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima prefectures) are rebuilding with the help of overseas countries and regions that have provided assistance for the cause. There is a program called "Arigato host town" that conducts exchanges between host towns and those countries.
