The town, which is located on the southern coast of Iwate Prefecture, boasts abundant nature such as the Goishi Coast, which has a beautiful ria coastline, and Mt. Goyo, which is the highest peak on the Sanriku Coast. The naturally blessed mountains and sea make for an array of seafood and vegetables. The city is particularly abundant in seafood, and you can enjoy various seafood from the Sanriku coast at restaurants in the city year-round.

Ofunato City is known as "The Sanma Town" because it catches the most of the fish in Honshu, Japan’s main island. In addition to holding the Sanma Festival in August, in align with the first catch of the year, Ofunato City also gives out grilled sanma at Tokyo Tower in September.

The Goishi Coast is a scenic area on the Sanriku Coast, which is also recognized as a national park and geopark. Along the coast, you can see intense coastal landscapes with massive rock formations, small islands and sea caves. This scenery interweaves with the gentle foliage of pine forests, which sway in the sea breeze.

An original ramen, using sanma (pacific saury) fish, which Ofunato catches the most of in Honshu. Sanma Ramen is prepared differently at every restaurant, so please try at least one bowl of this unique ramen.
